Your 3-Day Stone Town Itinerary

1

Day 1First Impressions of a UNESCO City

Arrive, Old Fort, House of Wonders & Forodhani Night Market

Morning

Arrival & Hotel Check-In

Arrive at Zanzibar International Airport and transfer to your Stone Town riad or heritage hotel (approximately 20 minutes). After settling in, enjoy a welcome drink in the courtyard and a brief orientation from your host. If time allows before lunch, take a short exploratory walk through the nearest alleyways to begin orienting yourself in the medina.

Afternoon

Arab Fort & House of Wonders

Begin your cultural exploration at the Arab Fort (Ngome Kongwe) — Stone Town’s oldest surviving building, constructed between 1698 and 1701 by Omani rulers. A local guide will bring the fort’s layered history to life before leading you next door to the House of Wonders (Beit el-Ajaib). Built in 1883 for Sultan Barghash, it was the first building in East Africa with electricity, running water and a mechanical lift.

Evening

Forodhani Night Market

As dusk falls over Stone Town harbour, make your way to Forodhani Gardens on the seafront. More than 50 food stalls fire up charcoal grills as the sun sets, filling the air with the scent of grilled octopus, Zanzibar pizza and freshly squeezed sugar cane juice. Try the Urojo soup, the chapati and the lobster if your budget allows. The market is at its most atmospheric between 7 pm and 9 pm.

Day 2Island Nature & Living History

Full Spice Farm Tour, Prison Island & Rooftop Dinner

Morning

Full-Day Spice Farm Tour

Set off after breakfast for the spice farms on Zanzibar’s central plains — a 30–45 minute drive from Stone Town. A farmer-guide leads you through groves of cloves, nutmeg, cardamom, cinnamon, vanilla, black pepper, turmeric and lemongrass. Each spice is demonstrated from its raw growing state through to the dried product, with fresh tastings at each stop. The tour usually includes a spectacular fruit salad prepared from whatever is in season.

Afternoon

Prison Island & Giant Tortoises

After a light lunch back in Stone Town, take a short boat ride to Changuu Island — nicknamed Prison Island for the 19th-century detention facility that was built here but never fully used. Today the island is famous for its sanctuary of Aldabra giant tortoises, gifted from the Seychelles in the 1920s. Some are believed to be over 190 years old. The surrounding coral-turquoise waters offer excellent snorkeling.

Evening

Rooftop Dinner over Stone Town

Return to Stone Town for the evening and dress for dinner at one of the old town’s legendary rooftop restaurants. Emerson Spice and Emerson on Hurumzi both offer candlelit rooftop dinners with live taarab music. The panoramic views across the medina’s minarets, baobab trees and the harbour make this one of the most romantic dinner settings in East Africa.

3

Day 3Deep History & Fond Farewells

Slave Market, Anglican Cathedral, Walking Tour & Departure

Morning

Slave Market & Anglican Cathedral

Begin your final morning with one of the most profound experiences in Stone Town: the Slave Market and Anglican Cathedral. The site of the last slave market in the Indian Ocean world, closed in 1873, is now occupied by the Anglican Cathedral of Christ Church. Its altar stands directly above the original whipping post. The underground slave chambers remain largely intact and are open to visitors.

Afternoon

Stone Town Walking Tour & Final Exploration

Join a guided walking tour of Stone Town’s remaining highlights. Your ZATI-registered guide leads you through alleyways lined with 200-year-old carved Zanzibari doors, past the Old Dispensary, through the Darajani Market and past Livingstone House. Allow time for souvenir shopping — spice packets, carved wooden boxes, kanga fabric and Tinga Tinga paintings make authentic gifts.

Evening

Departure or Onward Travel

Transfer to Zanzibar International Airport for your onward flight, or extend your Zanzibar adventure with a transfer to Nungwi or Kendwa for beach time. Our Stone Town & Beach Combo package (5 nights from $699) is the natural extension — two nights in Stone Town followed by three nights on Nungwi’s white-sand beaches.

Why Three Days is the Perfect Stone Town Visit

Stone Town rewards those who linger. While it is technically possible to see the major highlights in a single day, three days is the minimum needed to move beyond the surface and genuinely connect with the city’s extraordinary layered history. With three days, you have time for the Arab Fort and House of Wonders, the spice farms outside the city, a Prison Island excursion, the Slave Market, a proper guided walking tour and at least two evenings at Forodhani Night Market — enough to feel the city in your bones rather than simply tick a checklist.

Three nights also allows you to stay in one of Stone Town’s atmospheric boutique riads without constantly feeling the pressure to rush. The mornings in particular — when the alleyways are cool, the light is golden and the muezzin call echoes through the medina — are one of Stone Town’s great pleasures, and you really need the full three days to experience them properly. Our Stone Town Heritage Break package (three nights, $449) is built around exactly this itinerary.

Getting the Most from Stone Town’s Historic Sites

Stone Town’s historic sites are all within walking distance of each other, but the heat and complexity of the alleyways mean that planning your route carefully saves considerable time and energy. We recommend always beginning the day at the Arab Fort and House of Wonders before 10 am, when the cruise ship passengers arrive and the queues lengthen. The Slave Market is best visited mid-morning with a knowledgeable guide who can provide full historical context — the experience is emotionally demanding and the historical detail is best absorbed with expert commentary.

The Darajani Market is best experienced in the early morning (7–9 am) when the fish market is active and the fruit and vegetable stalls are at their most vibrant. The market is a genuine local institution rather than a tourist attraction and is the single best place to observe everyday Zanzibari life. Photography here is welcomed if you ask vendors first and purchase something in return — a courtesy that is always appreciated.

Day Trips from Stone Town

Stone Town makes an excellent base for day trips across Zanzibar Island. The most popular are the spice farm tour (30–45 minutes by road), Prison Island (20 minutes by boat) and Jozani Forest — the only national park on Zanzibar, home to the endemic red colobus monkey. Jozani is about 45 minutes from Stone Town and is easily combined with a spice farm visit in a full-day excursion.

For those combining Stone Town with beaches, Nungwi and Kendwa on the northern tip of the island are approximately 60–75 minutes by road. Our most popular combination package — Stone Town & Beach Combo (5 nights, $699) — allocates two nights to Stone Town and three nights to Nungwi. This is the ideal balance for first-time visitors to Zanzibar who want to experience both the cultural and beach dimensions of the island without feeling rushed.

Accommodation During Your Stone Town Itinerary

Our Stone Town itinerary package includes two nights in a carefully selected boutique riad within the UNESCO medina. Properties are chosen for their authentic character, quality of service and location — we favour places that are run by families with deep roots in Stone Town’s community rather than large international chains. Our current favourites include Zanzibar Palace Hotel, Emerson Spice and Stone Town Cafe & Bed.

All three are walking distance from the Arab Fort, Forodhani Night Market and the Slave Market, meaning you can step out of your riad each morning directly into the living UNESCO heritage. Check-in is typically from 2 pm, and most properties offer free luggage storage and refreshments if you arrive earlier. Airport pickup is included in all our Stone Town packages, with a licensed driver meeting you at arrivals with a name board.

Extending Beyond 3 Days in Stone Town

After three days, most visitors find they have covered Stone Town’s core highlights but are ready to combine the city experience with Zanzibar’s beaches. Our Zanzibar Discovery package (7 nights, $1,199) adds five nights on the coast to the two-night Stone Town experience, including island hopping, Mnemba Atoll snorkeling and a full day at Nungwi. This is our most comprehensive Zanzibar itinerary.

Alternatively, those with a specific interest in Stone Town’s history and architecture can easily fill four or five days without repeating any experiences. The Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) in July, the Sauti za Busara music festival in February and the Sultan’s Palace restoration project all add layers of interest for returning visitors. Contact our team to discuss extending your Stone Town stay.
