Mnemba Atoll — East Africa's Premier Snorkel & Dive Site
Mnemba Atoll is the star attraction for every visitor to Matemwe, and rightly so. The atoll is a protected marine reserve surrounding a private island, and the coral reef that encircles it is one of the healthiest and most diverse in the Indian Ocean. Hard and soft corals in extraordinary variety provide habitat for hundreds of fish species, resident populations of hawksbill and green turtles, white-tip reef sharks, and the spinner dolphins that have made Mnemba world-famous.
A full-day snorkeling trip to Mnemba Atoll departs by boat from Matemwe beach, reaching the atoll in around 25 minutes. Multiple snorkel spots are visited during the day — the outer reef wall, a coral garden in the shallows, and a deeper section popular with turtles — with lunch on board between sessions. The experience is accessible to all levels and regularly described by guests as the highlight of their entire Zanzibar visit.
PADI Diving at Mnemba — Reef Walls & Pelagic Wildlife
For certified scuba divers, Mnemba Atoll offers some of the finest diving in East Africa. The atoll wall drops to significant depths and is home to a remarkable range of marine life at every level: colourful nudibranchs and lionfish in the shallows, large groupers and Napoleon wrasse at mid-water, and occasional glimpses of whale sharks in the blue water beyond the wall. Visibility regularly exceeds 20 metres and dive briefings are delivered by experienced PADI instructors who know the site intimately.
Our two-tank Mnemba dive trip is available for both Open Water certified divers and advanced divers. The deeper sites — including Big Wall and Kichwani — are reserved for Advanced Open Water certification holders, while shallower reef dives are perfect for those at the start of their diving journey. The seven-night diving retreat package includes six guided dives across multiple sites, allowing progression and exploration in a structured, safe and deeply rewarding way.
Swimming with Spinner Dolphins — A Matemwe Highlight
Spinner dolphins are year-round residents of the Mnemba Atoll area and are encountered on most boat trips out of Matemwe. Our dedicated dolphin swim excursion is designed to maximise the quality of the encounter: the boat approaches pods slowly and from a non-threatening angle, and guests enter the water calmly when the dolphins indicate they are comfortable with human presence. The result is often an extraordinary, intimate experience of swimming alongside wild animals in their own environment.
The experience is managed responsibly — guests are briefed not to chase, touch or separate mothers from calves, and the boat operator follows strict guidelines to protect the welfare of the pod. This approach not only benefits the dolphins but tends to produce better, longer encounters than the aggressive methods used by less responsible operators elsewhere on the island.
Beach Life & Coastal Cycling in Matemwe
Beyond the water-based activities, Matemwe offers a wonderfully peaceful beach environment. The sand here is fine and white, the beach is rarely crowded, and the views north towards Ras Nungwi and south along the coast are spectacular. Sunrise walks along the beach at low tide are magical — the sea retreats to reveal a wide expanse of pale sand and the sky turns extraordinary shades of gold and pink before the sun clears the horizon.
Our north coast cycling tour takes guests along the quiet tracks that link Matemwe with neighbouring villages to the north and south. The terrain is flat, the road is lightly trafficked, and passing through small fishing communities gives a sense of the coast's character beyond the lodge gates. The tour is led by a local guide and can be tailored to different fitness levels — a gentle two-hour ride for those who prefer a leisurely pace, or a longer half-day exploration for those who want to cover more ground.

Marine Conservation at Mnemba
Mnemba Atoll is a protected marine conservation area. All boat operators and dive centres working in the atoll are required to follow strict environmental guidelines designed to protect the reef and the marine life that depends on it. These rules include limits on the number of divers per site, bans on touching or standing on coral, and restrictions on boat anchoring in sensitive areas.
When you book an activity at Mnemba through Zanzibar Holiday Deals, we only use licensed, responsible operators who are committed to these conservation standards. Choosing a responsible operator directly supports the long-term health of one of the Indian Ocean's most precious marine ecosystems.
