Your 3 Days in Matemwe

A suggested itinerary — adjust the pace and activities to suit your style.

Day 1

Arrive — Beach, Sunset Bar & Fresh Seafood Dinner

Morning

Arrive at Zanzibar International Airport and transfer north to Matemwe (approximately 60 minutes). The road passes through the island’s lush interior before emerging on the northeast coast, where the Indian Ocean suddenly fills the view. Check in to your boutique lodge, change into something comfortable and head straight to the beach. The sand at Matemwe is wide and fine, backed by coconut palms, and the sea at mid-tide is warm and clear.

Afternoon

Spend the afternoon at your own pace on the beach. At low tide, the reef flat extends far offshore and local fishermen wade through the shallows with traditional hand nets — it is worth walking out across the exposed sand to watch them at work. Snorkeling equipment is typically available from your lodge; the house reef just offshore offers good coral and a variety of reef fish even without venturing to Mnemba Atoll.

Evening

As the sun drops towards the horizon, settle in at the beach bar with a cold Tusker or a fresh lime soda. Matemwe sunsets face west across the island rather than directly over the ocean, but the sky turns extraordinary colours and the warm evening air, scented with salt and frangipani, makes it a perfect sundowner setting. Dinner is fresh seafood — grilled lobster, coconut prawns or whole snapper with pilau rice — at the lodge restaurant or a local beach cafe.

Day 2

Full-Day Mnemba Atoll Snorkeling or Diving Trip

Morning

Today is the centrepiece of your Matemwe stay: a full-day excursion to Mnemba Atoll. The boat departs from the beach in front of your lodge at around 8am, reaching the atoll in approximately 25 minutes. The first snorkel or dive session begins immediately on arrival, exploring the outer reef system where coral formations are dense and the fish life is extraordinary. Hawksbill turtles are commonly seen grazing in the shallower sections and the clarity of the water can reach 20 metres or more.

Afternoon

After the morning water session, lunch is served on board — fresh fruit, sandwiches and cold drinks — while the boat moves to a second site. The afternoon session explores a different part of the atoll, often including the deeper reef wall that drops away into the blue. Certified divers descend alongside PADI instructors to encounter groupers, Napoleon wrasse and the occasional white-tip reef shark resting on the sand below the wall. Snorkelers remain in the shallows with a dedicated guide.

Evening

Return to Matemwe in the late afternoon, sun-warmed and exhilarated from a day on the water. A hot shower and a rest before dinner is highly recommended — full-day boat trips are genuinely tiring in the best possible way. Dinner tonight deserves a celebration: ask the lodge to arrange a table on the beach if the weather allows, or simply enjoy the relaxed dining room atmosphere. Share stories from the day’s dives over a glass of wine and the freshest possible catch.

Day 3

Dawn Dhow Fishing or Dolphin Swim — Midday Beach — Depart

Morning

On your final morning, choose between two very different but equally memorable experiences. Option one: rise before dawn for a traditional dhow fishing trip with local fishermen. The dhow pushes off the beach in darkness and sails offshore as the first light appears. Hand lines are deployed, the silence is complete except for the creak of the rigging and the lap of water against the hull, and the coast of Matemwe glows gold as the sun rises above the palm trees. Option two: a morning spinner dolphin swim excursion to the waters around Mnemba Atoll, where resident pods are reliably encountered and guests can snorkel alongside these wild animals in a responsible, managed setting.

Afternoon

Whichever activity you choose, you will be back on the beach well before midday for a final few hours of Matemwe time. Swim at high tide, have a light beach lunch, and make the most of the lodge facilities — the pool, the sunbeds, the view. Pack unhurriedly and allow yourself one last walk along the beach before your transfer arrives. The drive back to the airport takes around 60 minutes and passes through the same beautiful coastal and interior landscape that greeted you on arrival.

Evening

Depart from Zanzibar International Airport for your onward destination. If extending your Zanzibar stay, Nungwi is just 30 kilometres to the northwest — a lively beach resort with great sunset views and excellent seafood — while Stone Town offers a full day of history, architecture, spice markets and renowned restaurants before an evening flight. Our team can arrange seamless transfers and accommodation at either destination; just ask when you book.

Planning Your Matemwe Trip — Key Tips

Three days in Matemwe gives you enough time for the essential Mnemba Atoll experience and at least one early morning activity — dhow fishing or dolphin swimming — that lets you see the northeast coast at its most elemental. If you can extend to five nights, you gain the luxury of a rest day, a second Mnemba trip (conditions allowing) and a coastal cycling excursion. For a diving retreat, seven nights is the recommended minimum to complete a structured programme and explore multiple atoll sites at leisure.

The best time to visit Matemwe for diving and snorkeling is June through March, with the peak months of July through October offering the finest visibility and most reliable conditions. The southeast monsoon brings slightly rougher seas from May, which can affect boat trips; from November onwards conditions typically settle again. Avoid the long rains of April and early May when Mnemba Atoll trips may be cancelled due to weather.

Getting to Matemwe from Zanzibar Airport

Matemwe is located on the northeast coast, approximately 45 kilometres from Zanzibar International Airport. The journey by private transfer takes around 60 minutes and costs between $35 and $50. The road passes through the centre of the island, offering a brief glimpse of the interior — clove and coconut plantations, small towns and the occasional red dirt track leading off into the bush. All of our Matemwe packages include private airport transfers as standard.

Public transport to Matemwe is possible via dala-dala from Stone Town but is slow, infrequent and ill-suited to guests arriving with dive gear or large luggage. We strongly recommend arranging a private transfer for the first and last days of your stay. If renting a vehicle independently, a 4WD is helpful during and after the rains as some tracks on the northeast coast can become muddy.

Extending Beyond Matemwe — North Coast Combinations

Matemwe pairs naturally with Nungwi at the northern tip of Zanzibar. Nungwi offers a livelier beach scene with sunset views over the ocean, a vibrant restaurant strip, and excellent dhow sailing. The drive between Matemwe and Nungwi takes around 30 minutes, making a combined stay of three nights each an easy and rewarding arrangement. Our Matemwe and Stone Town package combines the seclusion of the northeast coast with the history and culture of Zanzibar’s capital.

Stone Town deserves at least two full days of exploration — the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, the spice market, the seafront restaurants and the labyrinthine streets of the old Arab quarter are all compelling. A three-destination itinerary combining Stone Town, Matemwe and Nungwi over ten to twelve days represents one of the finest ways to experience the full range of what Zanzibar has to offer. Our team can arrange every detail of a combined itinerary; contact us to start planning.

Dining & Evenings in Matemwe

The lodge restaurants in Matemwe are genuinely excellent. Most properties have a single restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, with menus centred on freshly caught seafood, tropical fruit and traditional Swahili dishes. Lobster, crab, octopus and a variety of finfish are all available, typically grilled over charcoal and served with coconut rice, cassava chips or a fresh garden salad. Breakfast is usually a generous spread of fruit, eggs, fresh bread and coffee that will fuel a full day on the water.

Evenings in Matemwe are peaceful and beautiful. With no nightlife to speak of, the focus shifts to the natural world: the sky at dusk is often spectacular, with stars appearing in extraordinary density once the light fades — Matemwe has very little light pollution. Several lodges organise occasional special dinners on the beach by candlelight, with the sound of waves and the glow of the Indian Ocean as the setting. It is a romantic and deeply restorative end to days spent exploring one of East Africa’s finest marine environments.

3 Days vs 7 Days in Matemwe

Three days is the minimum to experience Mnemba Atoll properly and still enjoy the beach and one morning activity. Five days adds a second Mnemba trip, a sandbank picnic and a rest day. Seven days allows a full structured dive programme with six dives across multiple sites — the ideal duration for our diving retreat package.

For honeymooners and romantic escapes, five nights is the sweet spot — long enough to feel genuinely immersed in the peace and beauty of Matemwe without the urge to fill every day with organised activities.
