Nungwi's Beaches & Lagoon Swimming
Nungwi's beach is consistently rated among the finest in East Africa and is particularly celebrated for its calm, clear lagoon swimming. Unlike the east coast beaches that are affected by seaweed at low tide, Nungwi's natural tidal pool creates sheltered swimming conditions throughout the day, even at low water. The beach stretches for approximately 2 kilometres, divided between the lively resort section in front of the larger hotels and the quieter fishing village end, where local women still dry fish on the sand and fishermen mend their nets.
The western end of the beach, where the turtle rehabilitation lagoon is located, offers the best swimming at all states of the tide. The sand here is powdery-fine and brilliantly white, with the warm turquoise water at the lagoon's edge no deeper than a metre. Families with children find this end of the beach particularly appealing, and the turtle snorkeling experience — watching green sea turtles glide past in inches of crystal water — is one of the most memorable wildlife moments in Zanzibar.
Snorkeling & Diving at Mnemba Atoll
Mnemba Atoll is the crown jewel of Zanzibar's marine environment. This privately owned coral atoll 3 km off the north-east coast of Zanzibar is enclosed within a marine protected area where fishing is strictly prohibited, allowing its reef ecosystem to thrive undisturbed. The result is one of the richest concentrations of marine life in the western Indian Ocean — spinner and bottlenose dolphins, hawksbill and green sea turtles, giant moray eels, napoleon wrasse, lionfish and hundreds of reef fish species crowd the coral gardens.
The full-day Mnemba Atoll snorkeling trip departs Nungwi beach by speedboat in the morning and allows 3–4 hours of snorkeling across multiple sites within the protected area, with a beach lunch stop on the sandy atoll itself. Many guests consider this the single best day of their entire Zanzibar holiday. For certified divers, Mnemba offers wall dives, drift dives and pelagic encounters that rival the Maldives and Great Barrier Reef for sheer diversity and beauty.
Sunset Dhow Cruises from Nungwi
The sunset dhow cruise is arguably Nungwi's most iconic experience. As the afternoon heat softens and the trade winds fill the lateen sail, these hand-built wooden vessels glide around the northern headland of the island, offering unobstructed views of the sun setting over the open ocean. The sky turns through extraordinary shades of orange, pink and deep crimson as the dhow returns to the beach — a sequence of colours that is almost impossible to photograph well but completely impossible to forget.
Most sunset cruises last approximately two hours and depart around 4:30–5 pm depending on the season. Drinks, fresh tropical fruit and light snacks are included, and the crew often performs traditional songs as the sun goes down. Private dhow hire is also available for couples and small groups wanting an exclusive experience — contact our team to arrange this as part of your Nungwi package.
Nungwi Dhow Village & Cultural Experiences
Nungwi village, at the eastern end of the bay, is one of the last functioning dhow building communities in East Africa. Unlike the purpose-built tourist attractions found elsewhere in Zanzibar, this is a genuine working boat yard where craftsmen construct wooden dhows using techniques and tools virtually unchanged over five centuries. The boats are built entirely without power tools or plans — the boat-builders work entirely from memory and experience, producing vessels that sail the Indian Ocean routes to the Arabian Peninsula and East African coast.
The village tour is led by a community elder who explains the social structure of the fishing community, the significance of the dhow-building tradition to Nungwi's economic and cultural identity, and the challenges facing the industry as fibreglass boats become more affordable. It is one of the most authentic cultural encounters available in Zanzibar and pairs excellently with the sunset dhow cruise later in the same day — you appreciate the craftsmanship of the vessel so much more after seeing how it was made.
Deep Sea Fishing & Watersports
The waters off Nungwi's northern coast drop rapidly into the deep blue of the Indian Ocean, creating ideal conditions for big-game sport fishing. The most commonly caught species are wahoo — one of the fastest fish in the ocean and excellent eating — alongside yellowfin tuna, dorado (mahi-mahi), giant trevally, kingfish and, during peak season, blue and black marlin. Half-day and full-day fishing trips depart at first light to maximise the most productive morning feeding window.
For watersports beyond fishing and diving, Nungwi offers stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, windsurfing and glass-bottomed boat tours of the reef. The beach volleyball courts outside the larger resorts are open to all, and evening beach bars with fire shows and live music provide entertainment after dark. Nungwi has a genuine nightlife scene compared to more isolated Zanzibar beaches, with a cluster of beach bars operating until 1–2 am most nights.
