Kendwa's Famous Sunsets & Beach Life

Kendwa is defined by its sunsets. The beach faces due west, giving it an unobstructed view of the sun descending into the Indian Ocean every evening — a natural spectacle that few beaches anywhere in the world can match. The transformation begins around 5:30 pm, when the sky starts shifting from blue to gold and the shadows lengthen across the white sand. By 6 pm, the full performance is underway: deep oranges, burning reds and violet purples layering across the horizon as traditional fishing dhows pass silently across the view. By 6:30 pm, it is over — and the beach erupts in quiet applause from the travellers who have gathered on the sand to watch.

Beach life at Kendwa is distinctly more relaxed than at Nungwi. The smaller number of hotels means fewer sun loungers, less beach hawking and more genuine tranquillity. The calm lagoon conditions — created by the same natural tidal formation that protects Nungwi's beach — mean the water is swimmable at all states of the tide, with warm, crystal-clear conditions averaging 27–29 degrees Celsius throughout the year. This is genuinely one of the finest swimming beaches on the East African coast.

The Kendwa Full Moon Beach Party

Once a month, on the night of the full moon, Kendwa transforms. Kendwa Rocks Hotel — the most famous property on the beach — hosts East Africa's most celebrated beach party, attracting travellers from across Zanzibar and the mainland who come specifically for the event. Multiple stages operate simultaneously on the beach: reggae, hip-hop, electronic, and live Taarab music playing until sunrise. Fire eaters, acrobatic performers and local vendors create an extraordinary carnival atmosphere unlike anywhere else in East Africa.

The party begins formally around 9 pm but the beach bars start filling from 7 pm onwards. Entry is included for Kendwa Rocks guests — staying at the hotel for the Full Moon Party night is strongly recommended for the full experience. Day visitors from Nungwi and Stone Town typically pay a small entrance fee. The event runs until dawn, when exhausted but elated partygoers watch the sun rise over the Indian Ocean from the same beach where they danced all night.

Snorkeling & Watersports from Kendwa

Kendwa's reef snorkeling is excellent, if not at the same level as the protected marine reserve at Mnemba Atoll. Full-day snorkeling boat trips depart from Kendwa's beach and visit the north coast's best fringing reefs, where colourful tropical fish, small rays, blue-spotted lagoon rays and occasional green sea turtles are regularly seen. The boat trips include all equipment, a beach lunch stop and a guide who knows the best sites for each season and tidal condition.

Stand-up paddleboarding is Kendwa's most accessible watersport — the calm lagoon conditions make it ideal for first-timers and the crystal-clear water allows you to see the coral and sand below as you paddle. Kayaks are also available for hire at most properties. For the more adventurous, the North Zanzibar Quad Bike Tour visits the Ras Nungwi lighthouse at the very tip of the island and traverses coastal tracks that reveal a very different side of north Zanzibar from the beach perspective.

Getting to Nungwi from Kendwa & Day Trip Possibilities

Kendwa and Nungwi are separated by just 15 minutes by dala-dala or 20 minutes on foot along a coastal path. This proximity means that Kendwa guests can easily access all of Nungwi's activity options — including the PADI dive centre, deep-sea fishing, the Mnemba Atoll day trip and the dhow village tour — as day trips from their Kendwa base. We can arrange all Nungwi-based activities for Kendwa guests as part of any package.

Stone Town is approximately 70 minutes from Kendwa by road and makes an excellent day trip for those wanting to experience the UNESCO heritage city without changing accommodation. A private transfer departs Kendwa in the morning, allowing 5–6 hours in Stone Town including the Arab Fort, Forodhani Night Market lunch, and a guided old-town walk, before returning to Kendwa in time for the sunset.

Practical Information for Kendwa Activities

Most activities in Kendwa can be booked directly through your hotel or through our team before arrival. We recommend pre-booking the sunset dhow cruise, snorkeling day trip and North Zanzibar Quad Bike Tour, as availability is limited during peak season (July, August, December and January). The Full Moon Party requires no advance booking for Kendwa Rocks guests — simply confirm your accommodation dates align with the lunar calendar, which our team can help you check at the time of booking.

Kendwa village has limited ATM and currency exchange facilities, so it is advisable to arrive with sufficient cash for activities, meals and incidentals. Most hotels accept credit cards, but beach vendors and activity operators prefer cash. The nearest bank is in Nungwi (15 minutes) or Stone Town (70 minutes). Tipping is customary and appreciated: 10% for restaurant meals, $2–$5 per day for hotel housekeeping and $5–$10 for tour guides are appropriate amounts.
