Snorkeling Mnemba Atoll — Zanzibar's Finest Reef

The Mnemba Atoll Marine Protected Area is widely considered the finest snorkeling destination in the entire Zanzibar archipelago and one of the best in East Africa. The reef's protected status means fish populations are dramatically healthier than on unprotected reefs — schools of hundreds of fish, dense coral coverage and remarkably clear water create a snorkeling experience that consistently exceeds expectations. Hawksbill sea turtles are resident year-round and are routinely encountered on every trip.

The full-day snorkel trip at $85 per person departs from Matemwe (or Nungwi, slightly longer crossing) by 8am, visiting multiple snorkel sites around the atoll throughout the day to take advantage of different tidal conditions and fish behaviour. Lunch is served on the boat or at a picnic on the sandbank that emerges on the atoll's western side at low tide — one of the most beautiful and ephemeral dining experiences in Tanzania. All snorkel equipment, marine park entry fees and a certified guide are included.

Swimming with Spinner Dolphins

Mnemba Atoll's resident spinner dolphin pod is one of the most consistent and well-studied in the Indian Ocean. The pod uses the atoll's warm, shallow waters as a resting zone after overnight deep-water feeding, typically arriving in the early morning and remaining until mid-day before heading out to sea again. This predictable rhythm means morning dolphin trips have a very high success rate year-round.

Spinner dolphins are extraordinarily playful and curious. When the boat stops and snorkelers enter the water quietly, the dolphins frequently approach within a few metres — not to interact, but simply to investigate. Watching a group of 20 or 30 dolphins spiralling and spinning in the clear blue water around you is one of the most joyful wildlife experiences in the world. Our guides are trained in responsible dolphin interaction protocols and will always put the animals' wellbeing above the desire for an encounter.

Manta Ray Diving at Mnemba

Between November and May, Mnemba Atoll becomes one of East Africa's premier manta ray diving destinations. Oceanic and reef manta rays — with wingspans reaching 4 metres in the case of the oceanic species — visit cleaning stations on the atoll's deeper reef zones, where small cleaner wrasse pick parasites from their gill plates. Hovering motionless at 15–20 metres depth as a manta ray glides past at close range is one of the most viscerally impressive experiences in all of diving.

The specialist manta ray diving trip at $140 per person is run only during the November–May season when rays are reliably present. Our dive guides know the specific cleaning station locations and approach protocols to maximise encounter quality without disturbing the animals. Manta ray behaviour at cleaning stations is predictable enough that two dives on a single day typically yields multiple encounters. Guests are briefed on manta etiquette — no bubbles near the gills, no touching, no flash photography — before entering the water.

Sunset Sailing Around the Atoll

The sunset champagne sail around Mnemba Atoll is the perfect way to end a day of water activities. Departing from Matemwe beach at around 4:30pm, the traditional wooden dhow or modern catamaran circumnavigates the atoll over two hours as the light transitions from golden afternoon to deep orange and finally the violet of early evening. The view of Mnemba Island's unbroken palm canopy silhouetted against a Zanzibar sunset is one of the archipelago's most photographed scenes.

Champagne and canapés are served on deck, and the crew monitors for spinner dolphin pods that often become active at this hour as they leave the atoll for their overnight feeding grounds. Whale watching is occasionally possible during the humpback whale migration (July to October). The $120 per person price includes boat transport, champagne, canapés and a guide. Maximum group size is 10 — book in advance to avoid disappointment, particularly during peak season.

Accessing Mnemba Atoll — Practical Information

Mnemba Atoll is accessible only by boat and is not reachable by swimming from the mainland — it sits 3km offshore. Boat trips depart from Matemwe village on the northeast coast (the closest and quickest access, 15–20 minutes) and from Nungwi on the northern tip (30–40 minutes). Most boutique lodges in Matemwe have their own boats and can arrange trips directly. Independent operators and dive centres in Matemwe also run daily trips.

The Marine Protected Area entry fee is payable on arrival by boat and covers unlimited daily access for snorkeling and diving. The fee is included in all our package and activity prices. Please note that landing on Mnemba Island itself (the private land inside the atoll) is restricted to guests of the &Beyond Mnemba Island lodge — day visitors access only the surrounding marine reserve by boat. Booking through our team ensures you arrive with the correct permits and that all fees are pre-arranged.
