Where to Stay in Mafia Island 2026
From award-winning eco-lodges on the edge of the marine park to budget guesthouses in Kilindoni — find the perfect Mafia Island accommodation for every budget.
Accommodation Options on Mafia Island
Mafia Island has a small but carefully curated range of accommodation — each property offers a genuinely different experience of this extraordinary remote island.
Premium Marine Lodges
$300 – $700 / night
e.g. Pole Pole Bungalows, Chole Mjini Lodge
Mafia’s finest lodges offer breathtaking beachfront settings on the edge of the marine park, with private bungalows, gourmet cuisine and direct access to snorkeling and diving. Chole Mjini is built in the ruins of an Arab merchant’s house on Chole Island — accessible only by boat — and is one of Africa’s most unique stays. Pole Pole sits directly on Utende beach with stilted bandas overlooking the coral lagoon. Both are consistently rated among East Africa’s best eco-lodges.
- Private beachfront bungalows or tree houses
- Full-board dining with fresh seafood
- Marine park activities included or discounted
- Solar-powered & eco-certified
- Expert resident dive & snorkel guides
Eco-Lodges
$120 – $300 / night
e.g. Mafia Island Lodge, Butiama Beach
A growing selection of well-run eco-lodges provides comfortable, characterful accommodation at more accessible prices. These properties typically offer en-suite bungalows with fans or air conditioning, garden or sea views, and a range of activities bookable on-site. Half-board or full-board options are standard. Most are within 10 minutes of the marine park entry point at Utende and offer excellent snorkeling directly off the beach at high tide.
- En-suite bungalows with fans or A/C
- Half-board or full-board meal plans
- On-site activity booking
- Beach access & snorkeling
- Free airport transfers with most bookings
Dive Camps
$100 – $250 / night
Packages often include dives
Dedicated dive camps cater to scuba divers who want to maximise their time underwater. Typically offering simple but comfortable accommodation — think clean bandas or tented chalets — these camps include two or more guided dives per day in the marine park. The trade-off is luxury for immersion: meals are straightforward, facilities are basic but functional, and conversation around the dinner table revolves around the day’s best dive sites. Ideal for serious divers on a focused marine park trip.
- 2 guided dives included per night
- All dive equipment available to hire
- PADI courses available on-site
- Marine park permit included
- Basic but comfortable bandas
Budget Guesthouses in Kilindoni
$30 – $70 / night
Various family-run guesthouses
Kilindoni, Mafia’s main town, has a small selection of locally-run guesthouses offering simple, clean rooms at very affordable prices. These are best suited to independent travellers or those combining Mafia with local immersion, as Kilindoni is around 20 minutes by road from the main marine park activities at Utende. Rooms typically have fans, en-suite bathrooms and breakfast included. Local restaurants near the guesthouse serve excellent fresh fish at very modest prices.
- Simple clean rooms with fan
- En-suite bathrooms available
- Breakfast typically included
- Walking distance to fish market
- Arrange own transport to marine park
Choosing the Right Accommodation on Mafia Island
Accommodation on Mafia Island is intentionally limited — there are perhaps 150 to 200 tourist beds on the entire island — which is precisely what keeps Mafia so special. The island has consciously avoided the mass development that has transformed parts of Zanzibar’s coast, and Tanzania’s marine park authorities are committed to keeping visitor numbers low. The result is an accommodation landscape dominated by small, owner-managed eco-lodges and dive camps with an authentic, unhurried character.
The most important decision when choosing where to stay is proximity to the marine park. Most visitors choose to stay in or near Utende, on the west coast, which is the closest point to the core marine park zones and the main whale shark aggregation area. The premium lodges — Pole Pole and Chole Mjini — are both in this area and are the first to fill during peak whale shark season (October to February). Booking at least three months in advance is strongly recommended for premium properties.
Pole Pole & Chole Mjini — Mafia’s Iconic Eco-Lodges
Pole Pole Bungalows ("Slowly Slowly" in Swahili) sets the tone perfectly for a Mafia Island stay. Its eight stilted banda bungalows overlook the turquoise lagoon at Utende, each with a private veranda and hammock, solar lighting and ceiling fans. The open-air dining area serves exceptional full-board meals built around the morning’s catch — octopus, kingfish, prawns and lobster feature regularly. Pole Pole is an active participant in marine park conservation and employs exclusively local staff.
Chole Mjini is arguably Mafia’s most extraordinary accommodation: seven tree-house bandas built within the atmospheric ruins of a 19th-century Arab trading settlement on Chole Island, accessible only by a short boat crossing from Utende. Electricity is solar-powered, water is freshwater, and the lodge operates on a philosophy of total community benefit — all profits fund local schools and health clinics. Staying at Chole Mjini is an experience genuinely unlike anywhere else in the Indian Ocean.
Dive Camps — Best Value for Scuba Divers
For dedicated scuba divers, the dive camp model offers outstanding value. A typical all-inclusive dive camp package at around $150–200 per night includes two guided dives, full equipment hire, marine park entry fee, full-board meals and basic accommodation. Compared to paying separately for accommodation, food, equipment and dives, a dive camp package typically saves 25–35% for guests planning to dive daily. PADI Open Water, Advanced and Rescue courses are available at most camps.
Dive conditions at Mafia are year-round accessible, though peak visibility (20–30m) occurs during the dry season (June to October). All dive operations are required to hold Tanzania Coastal Management Unit licensing and PADI or NAUI affiliation. Our team has personally vetted every dive camp in our accommodation portfolio for safety equipment standards, guide-to-diver ratios and emergency protocols.
Staying in Kilindoni on a Budget
Independent travellers and budget-conscious visitors can stay very comfortably in Kilindoni, Mafia’s main town, for $30–70 per night. Several family-run guesthouses offer clean, simple rooms with breakfast and a warm welcome. Kilindoni has the island’s only fuel station, ATM (unreliable — bring cash), small market and a handful of local restaurants serving fresh fish, rice and chips.
The main practical consideration for Kilindoni stays is that the marine park entry point at Utende is about 20km away, requiring a taxi or motorcycle taxi (boda boda) for daily activities. Most guesthouses can arrange this for around $10 each way. Despite the distance, staying in Kilindoni gives a much more authentic taste of daily Mafia life and is an excellent base for village walks, the fish market and the island’s few local restaurants.
When to Book Mafia Island Accommodation
Mafia Island’s very limited accommodation supply means early booking is essential, particularly for premium lodges during whale shark season. Pole Pole and Chole Mjini typically fill their October to February allocations six months or more in advance. For these properties, we recommend enquiring as early as possible — ideally in May or June for an October–February trip.
Eco-lodges and dive camps have more availability but also fill during peak season (July–August and December–January). The low season (March–May) offers the best accommodation prices — sometimes 40% below peak rates — and a very quiet, intimate island experience, though some properties reduce operations or close entirely during the long rains. Our team maintains real-time relationships with all Mafia Island accommodation providers and can advise on current availability for your preferred dates.
