Why Choose a Bwejuu Holiday Package?
Bwejuu sits on the south-east coast of Zanzibar, just a few kilometres south of the more famous Paje. Unlike its northern neighbour, Bwejuu has resisted the pressure of mass tourism and remains an authentic Swahili fishing village where life moves at a gentle, unhurried pace. The beach is long, clean and almost empty — a remarkable thing to say about any beach in the Indian Ocean. Booking a holiday package here is a statement of intent: you want the real Zanzibar, not a resort experience.
Bwejuu's tidal flat beach is one of its defining features. At low tide, the ocean recedes hundreds of metres, leaving a vast expanse of warm, shallow water and white sand that is perfect for walking, swimming and snorkeling. At high tide, the beach is lapped by calm turquoise waves that are ideal for gentle swimming. The reef is close to shore and easily reached by local boat. Our packages include all transfers and most activities, so you can focus entirely on relaxing.
What's Included in Bwejuu Packages?
Every Bwejuu package includes return airport transfers, accommodation in a vetted guesthouse or beach bungalow, and daily breakfast. Most packages also include at least one guided activity such as a snorkeling trip, bicycle hire or a cooking class. Our popular Bwejuu & Paje East Coast Double package includes transfers between the two villages and accommodation at handpicked properties in both — a seamless two-destination experience along the same beautiful coastline.
The budget-conscious Bwejuu Budget Explorer is particularly popular with solo travellers and couples who want maximum experience at minimum cost. Local guesthouse accommodation, five days of bicycle hire, a reef snorkeling trip and a Swahili cooking class are bundled together at a price that is hard to match anywhere on the island. All operators used in our packages are vetted by our Zanzibar-based team for quality, safety and fair treatment of local staff.
Best Time to Visit Bwejuu
Bwejuu is beautiful year-round, but the east coast has a slightly different climate to the north. The best months for beach relaxation are June to October and December to February, when the Indian Ocean is calm and the weather is dry and sunny. During these periods the tidal flats are at their best and snorkeling conditions are excellent, with visibility of 15 to 25 metres on the fringing reef.
The east coast kaskazi wind blows from December to March, creating small waves that are ideal for paddling and swimming but not suitable for flat-water activities. The longer rains of April and May bring lower prices — often 20–30% cheaper — and the village is at its greenest and most photogenic. Bwejuu receives fewer visitors than Paje during shoulder season, making it an excellent choice for travellers seeking solitude outside of peak dates.
The Bwejuu – Paje Beach Walk
One of the great pleasures of staying in Bwejuu is the famous 3 km beach walk to Paje. The path runs along the high tide line past traditional fishing boats, seaweed farms tended by local women, and occasional beachside cafes. The walk takes around 45 minutes at a leisurely pace and is one of the most enjoyable things to do on Zanzibar's east coast. You can walk to Paje for lunch and return by bicycle or dala-dala.
In Paje you will find a livelier scene with kite surfing schools, beach bars, and a good selection of restaurants and cafes. Spending a day or afternoon in Paje while based in the quieter Bwejuu gives you the best of both worlds — east coast energy when you want it, and genuine peace and quiet when you return to your guesthouse as the sun sets over the tidal flats.
How to Book Your Bwejuu Holiday Package
Booking is easy through our secure online enquiry form or by contacting our team directly. Select your preferred package, dates and group size, and we will confirm availability within 24 hours. A 20% deposit secures your booking with the balance due 60 days before arrival. We accept all major credit cards, PayPal and bank transfers. Full refunds are available up to 30 days before travel under our flexible cancellation policy.
Bwejuu's guesthouses have limited capacity — particularly the most popular beachfront properties — so we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance and six to eight weeks during peak season (July, August and December). Groups of four or more receive preferential rates and can often arrange private beach bungalows or entire guesthouse wings. Contact us for group-specific pricing and customised itinerary options.
