The additional 15–20 minutes on the boat crossing to Mnemba is a real but manageable tradeoff — most operators from Nungwi depart early enough to reach the atoll by 8:30–9am, before conditions become choppy in the afternoon. Nungwi’s beach stretches several kilometres and has excellent year-round swimming — unusually for Zanzibar, the northern beaches avoid the tidal variation that leaves some east coast beaches inaccessible at low tide. This makes Nungwi a good choice for guests who want to combine Mnemba Atoll with long beach days and a choice of restaurants and beach bars in the evenings.
