&Beyond Mnemba Island Lodge
$1,500 – $2,500 / night
All-inclusive, 12 bandas only
The only accommodation on Mnemba Island itself — and one of the most celebrated small lodges in all of Africa. &Beyond Mnemba Island operates on a completely all-inclusive basis: accommodation in 12 thatched beachside bandas, all meals, all snorkeling and diving, all drinks, all boat transfers and a dedicated marine naturalist guide. With a maximum of 24 guests at any time, the lodge maintains an extraordinary staff-to-guest ratio and a level of personalised service that few properties anywhere in the world can match.
- 12 private beachside bandas only
- Fully all-inclusive (meals, drinks, activities)
- Unlimited diving & snorkeling
- Dedicated marine naturalist guide
- 20-minute boat transfer from Matemwe
Boutique Lodges in Matemwe
$200 – $500 / night
e.g. Matemwe Lodge, Matemwe Retreat, Essque Zalu
Matemwe village on Zanzibar’s northeast coast is the ideal base for daily Mnemba Atoll visits — the crossing takes just 15–20 minutes by boat, and most Matemwe boutique lodges have their own boats or close partnerships with marine operators for daily atoll excursions. Essque Zalu is the area’s most acclaimed property, with overwater and beachfront suites, a stunning infinity pool and some of the most attentive service in Tanzania. Matemwe Lodge (operated by Asilia Africa) is a smaller, more intimate option with 12 beachside cottages directly facing the atoll.
- Shortest crossing to Mnemba (15–20 min)
- Own boats or direct operator links
- Beachfront infinity pools
- Half-board or full-board available
- Expert marine activity coordination
Luxury Hotels in Nungwi
$200 – $600 / night
e.g. Zuri Zanzibar, The Residence, RiuPalace
Nungwi on Zanzibar’s northern tip is 30–40 minutes by boat from Mnemba Atoll — slightly further than Matemwe but still very practical for day trips. Nungwi offers a wider range of accommodation options and a livelier beach village atmosphere, with excellent restaurants, beach bars and watersports facilities. The Residence Zanzibar is the area’s leading luxury property with private pool villas on the clifftop. Zuri Zanzibar at Kendwa offers a more design-forward boutique experience just south of Nungwi.
- Wide range of luxury properties
- Lively beach village atmosphere
- 30–40 min boat transfer to Mnemba
- Excellent dining & beach bars
- Watersports & dive centres on-site
Mid-Range Matemwe Guesthouses
$100 – $200 / night
e.g. Matemwe Bungalows, local guesthouses
A small but growing selection of well-run mid-range guesthouses in Matemwe offers comfortable accommodation at more accessible prices. These properties typically offer clean en-suite rooms or bungalows, breakfast included, and can arrange Mnemba Atoll day trips through local operators. Matemwe village itself is a pleasant, authentic Swahili fishing community — a very different atmosphere from the resort areas of Nungwi or Kendwa, and appealing to independent travellers who prefer local immersion alongside world-class marine activities.
- En-suite rooms & bungalows
- Breakfast included
- Local operator Mnemba trips
- Authentic Swahili village location
- 15–20 min to Mnemba by boat
Should You Stay on Mnemba Island or at a Matemwe Lodge?
The choice between staying on Mnemba Island itself (&Beyond) versus basing yourself in Matemwe for day trips comes down to budget and the kind of experience you want. Staying on the island — at $1,500–$2,500 per night all-inclusive — is genuinely one of Africa’s most extraordinary hospitality experiences. You wake on a private island, walk to the water in seconds, snorkel before breakfast, and have the reef entirely to yourself once day visitors have gone. The all-inclusive model means you never open your wallet once you arrive.
Basing yourself in Matemwe at $200–$500 per night gives you 80% of the marine experience at a fraction of the price. Daily boat trips to the atoll are easily arranged, and Matemwe’s boutique lodges — particularly Essque Zalu and Matemwe Lodge — are genuinely excellent properties in their own right. The key practical advantage is the 15–20 minute crossing: you can be in the water at Mnemba by 8:30am, often before other operators have arrived from more distant bases.
&Beyond Mnemba Island — What to Expect
Mnemba Island is a small circular island approximately 1.5km in circumference, entirely covered with indigenous trees and surrounded by a white sand beach. The 12 bandas are positioned individually around the island’s perimeter, each with its own beach frontage and complete privacy from neighbouring units. The "banda" design — a large thatched room open to the sea breeze on three sides — is specifically adapted to the equatorial climate: cool, light-filled and perfectly suited to the Indian Ocean environment.
The main lodge area — a large open-sided dining room and lounge on the island’s western shore — serves meals built around the daily catch: lobster, crayfish, octopus, kingfish and dorado are staples, prepared with both Swahili spicing and lighter European styles. &Beyond’s marine naturalist is available to guests throughout the day for diving, snorkeling and guided reef walks, and can provide briefings on every species encountered. Booking is typically required 6–12 months in advance for peak season availability.
Matemwe’s Best Boutique Lodges
Essque Zalu Zanzibar is Matemwe’s most acclaimed property — a collection of 39 suites and villas positioned on a low cliff above the beach, with private pools, spa, and one of Zanzibar’s most photogenic infinity pools overlooking the Indian Ocean. The property’s own dive centre and Mnemba boat mean Mnemba Atoll trips are seamlessly integrated into the guest experience. Rates run from around $400 to $800 per suite per night, with breakfast included.
Matemwe Lodge (Asilia Africa) is a smaller and more intimate alternative — 12 beachside cottages facing directly towards Mnemba Atoll, with a resident dive instructor and small fleet of snorkel boats. The lodge has a genuine family feel and is particularly well-regarded for its guiding quality and community involvement in Matemwe village. At $250–$400 per cottage per night half-board, it offers outstanding value for the quality of location and marine access.
Nungwi as an Alternative Base
Nungwi on Zanzibar’s northern tip offers a larger range of accommodation options and a more varied social scene than the quieter Matemwe coast. The additional 15–20 minutes on the boat crossing to Mnemba is a real but manageable tradeoff — most operators from Nungwi depart early enough to reach the atoll by 8:30–9am, before conditions become choppy in the afternoon. The Residence Zanzibar, with its private pool villas and clifftop setting, is the area’s most celebrated luxury property and pairs very well with Mnemba Atoll day trips.
Nungwi’s beach stretches several kilometres and has excellent year-round swimming — unusually for Zanzibar, the northern beaches avoid the tidal variation that leaves some east coast beaches inaccessible at low tide. This makes Nungwi a good choice for guests who want to combine Mnemba Atoll with long beach days and a choice of restaurants and beach bars in the evenings. Our Mnemba Diving & Snorkeling Week package can be based from either Matemwe or Nungwi depending on your preference.
Booking Advice for Mnemba Atoll Accommodation
&Beyond Mnemba Island is consistently one of Africa’s most-requested lodges and books up months in advance, particularly for peak season (July–August and December–January). We recommend enquiring at least 6 months ahead for these periods, and 3 months ahead for shoulder season. Matemwe boutique lodges also book up during peak season — 2–3 months advance booking is advisable for Essque Zalu and Matemwe Lodge at busy times.
Our team has direct reservation relationships with all properties across the Mnemba Atoll area and can often access allocations when online booking channels show full. We can also advise on the best value windows — the low season (March–May and November) offers significant discounts of 25–40% at most Matemwe and Nungwi properties, and the marine activities remain excellent throughout. Contact us with your preferred dates and budget for a personalised accommodation recommendation.
